A gift for La Mav friends, in preservation of traditional crafts...
What does it take to make a rattan clutch? You will be surprised to learn that weaving rattan baskets or bags takes at least 3 months, due to time spent on harvesting and prepping of rattan. Can we have the rattan coloured? You could...
The colouring & the travelling...
The process started much earlier this year, when the team at La Mav wanted a sustainable bag - not a plastic bag, came across Tanoti's Community Initiatives which aims to preserve the intricate Penan Rattan Craft Products. The measurements were decided and then the hardwork came... Tanoti's Director & Co-Founder, Ms Jacquline Fong, travelled more than 4 hours in her 4WD into the deep forest of Sarawak on monthly basis for community initiatives project. |
This time, she brings home not just the finished rattan crafts but also raw rattan splits back to the Tanoti House in Kuching to be coloured. The Penan do have black coloured rattans by boiling daun kemawah leaves and burying the rattan splits with mud overnight to make black-dyed rattan, a prominent colour in Penan rattan craft. For the rattan to have other colours, the splits were brought home to Kuching to be processed. and then back into the deep forest the next trip to be distributed to the Penan ladies for weaving.
The weavers had their basketry tradition passed down for generations and through Tanoti, they are able to raise their standards and create pieces that are marketable to the urban dwellers.
